Asian Handicap is a football bet in which one team starts with a virtual goal advantage or deficit, and the bet is settled on the score after that adjustment. The draw is removed as a selection, so you only pick one of two sides. This Asian Handicap Singapore guide explains the handicap lines, the five possible results and how returns work out in SGD.
Say Arsenal are -1.5 against Chelsea and win 2-1. Take 1.5 goals off Arsenal and the adjusted score is 0.5 to 1 in Chelsea’s favour. A bet on Arsenal -1.5 loses and a bet on Chelsea +1.5 wins. Arsenal won the match but did not cover the handicap.
What Is Asian Handicap Betting?
Asian Handicap betting is a football market that adjusts the final score by a set number of goals before the bet is settled. The stronger team gets a negative handicap, a deficit it has to overcome. The weaker team gets the matching positive handicap, a head start.
Take Arsenal -1.0 against Chelsea +1.0. For settlement, one goal is taken off Arsenal’s total.
| Final score | Adjusted score | Arsenal -1.0 | Chelsea +1.0 |
| Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea | 2-1 | Wins | Loses |
| Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea | 1-1 | Stake refunded | Stake refunded |
| Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea | 0-1 | Loses | Wins |
The handicap is used only to settle the bet. The real result does not change.
How Does Asian Handicap Work?
Apply the handicap to the final score of the team you backed, then compare it with the opponent’s actual score. Ahead means the bet wins, behind means it loses, and level means your stake comes back.
Positive Asian Handicap (+)
A plus sign is a head start, usually given to the underdog. Your team can draw, or on bigger lines lose narrowly, and the bet can still win.
Negative Asian Handicap (-)
A minus sign is a deficit, usually given to the favourite. Your team has to win by more than the handicap for the bet to win in full.
A 1-1 draw on a half-goal line:
| Your selection | Adjusted score | Result |
| Chelsea +0.5 | Arsenal 1, Chelsea 1.5 | Win |
| Arsenal -0.5 | Arsenal 0.5, Chelsea 1 | Lose |
Asian Handicap Lines Explained
Asian Handicap rules depend on the type of line: whole-goal, half-goal or quarter-goal. Each type allows different results.
Whole-Goal Handicap (0, ±1, ±2)
The adjusted score can finish level. When it does, the bet is a push and the full stake is refunded. A handicap of 0 works like Draw No Bet. At -1, your team must win by two or more, and a one-goal win is refunded.
Half-Goal Handicap (±0.5, ±1.5)
Nobody scores half a goal, so every bet wins or loses in full. At Asian Handicap 0.5, the favourite (-0.5) needs a win and the underdog (+0.5) needs a win or a draw. At Asian Handicap 1.5, the favourite must win by two or more, while the underdog can lose by one and still cover.
Quarter-Goal Handicap (±0.25, ±0.75)
A quarter-goal line is two bets in one. Your stake is split into two equal halves, one on each neighbouring line.
| Line | How the stake is split |
| -0.25 | Half on 0, half on -0.5 |
| +0.25 | Half on 0, half on +0.5 |
| -0.75 | Half on -0.5, half on -1 |
| +0.75 | Half on +0.5, half on +1 |
Each half settles on its own line. On Asian Handicap -0.75, a one-goal win means the -0.5 half wins and the -1 half is refunded, which is a half win. On Asian Handicap +0.25, a draw is also a half win.
Understanding Asian Handicap Bet Results
An Asian Handicap bet can settle in five ways: full win, half win, push, half loss or full loss. A push returns the whole stake and happens only on whole-goal lines. A half win or half loss happens only on quarter-goal lines, where one half of the stake is refunded and the other half wins or loses.
Find your line, then read across to how your team did.
| Your line | Win by 2+ | Win by 1 | Draw | Lose by 1 | Lose by 2+ |
| -1.5 | Win | Lose | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| -1.25 | Win | Half loss | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| -1.0 | Win | Push | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| -0.75 | Win | Half win | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| -0.5 | Win | Win | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| -0.25 | Win | Win | Half loss | Lose | Lose |
| 0 | Win | Win | Push | Lose | Lose |
| +0.25 | Win | Win | Half win | Lose | Lose |
| +0.5 | Win | Win | Win | Lose | Lose |
| +0.75 | Win | Win | Win | Half loss | Lose |
| +1.0 | Win | Win | Win | Push | Lose |
| +1.25 | Win | Win | Win | Half win | Lose |
| +1.5 | Win | Win | Win | Win | Lose |
Read down the “Win by 1” column: one score, such as a 2-1 win, produces all five results depending on the line. Read our Asian Handicap half-win and half-loss rules for more worked examples.
How to Calculate Asian Handicap Payouts
An Asian Handicap payout depends on your stake, the decimal odds and which of the five results you get. Decimal odds include your stake, so a winning $100 bet at 1.90 returns $190, of which $90 is net profit. Before calculating a return, it helps to understand how football betting odds work and what decimal odds represent. All odds and stakes here are fictional.
| Result | Calculation | Total return on $100 at 1.90 | Net profit or loss |
| Full win | Stake × odds | $190 | +$90 |
| Half win | (Half stake × odds) + half stake | $145 | +$45 |
| Push | Stake returned | $100 | $0 |
| Half loss | Half stake returned | $50 | -$50 |
| Full loss | Nothing returned | $0 | -$100 |
Three worked examples on a $100 stake:
- Arsenal -0.75 at 1.90, Arsenal win 2-1. The -0.5 half wins (S50×1.90=S95) and the -1 half is refunded (S50).TotalreturnS145, net profit $45.
- Chelsea +0.25 at 1.95, match ends 1-1. The +0.5 half wins (S50×1.95=S97.50) and the 0 half is refunded (S50).TotalreturnS147.50, net profit $47.50.
- Arsenal -0.25 at 2.05, match ends 1-1.The 0 half is refunded (S50)andthe-0.5halfloses.TotalreturnS50, net loss $50.
An Asian Handicap calculator does the same sums. It cannot remove the operator’s margin.
Asian Handicap vs 1X2 Betting: What's the Difference?
The main difference is the draw. In 1X2 you pick one of three outcomes: home win (1), draw (X) or away win (2). In Asian Handicap you pick one of two sides, and the line decides what a draw or a narrow margin means.
| Feature | 1X2 | Asian Handicap |
| Selections | Three: home, draw, away | Two: one team or the other |
| The draw | A selection you can back | Settles as a win, loss or refund, depending on the line |
| Refunds and partial results | None | Full refund on whole-goal lines, half win or half loss on quarter-goal lines |
Neither market is easier to win. Asian Handicap odds sit closer to even because the line balances the two sides, not because the risk is lower. Our guide to 1X2 vs Asian Handicap betting covers the differences in full.
How Does Asian Handicap Work in Singapore?
The handicap maths is the same in Singapore. What differs is who is licensed to offer the bet and how that operator settles it.
Singapore Pools Asian Handicap Rules
Singapore Pools published rules say that Asian Handicap:
- Is available online only, to Singapore Pools Account holders
- Is offered on selected matches
- Has lines and odds that can change while betting is open
- Is settled on regulation time, so extra time is excluded
Pre-Match vs Live Asian Handicap
A pre-match bet applies the handicap to the full-time score. A live Asian Handicap bet at Singapore Pools is settled only on goals scored after the bet is placed, so the scoreline is in effect reset to 0-0.
Example: Liverpool lead Everton 1-0 after 60 minutes, and the match finishes 2-1.
| What is compared | Pre-match bet | Live bet placed at 60 minutes |
| Score used for settlement | Liverpool 2-1 Everton | Liverpool 1-1 Everton |
| Everton +0.5 | Loses | Wins |
| Liverpool -0.5 | Wins | Loses |
The same line gives opposite results because of when the bet was placed. Check the score and line on your bet slip before confirming a live bet.
Common Asian Handicap Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating a match win as a handicap win. A favourite at -1.5 that wins 1-0 has won the match and lost the bet.
- Confusing payout with profit. A S190returnonaS100 stake is $90 of profit.
- Reading a quarter-goal line as a single bet. A -0.75 line is two half-stakes, on -0.5 and -1, and each settles separately.
- Applying pre-match rules to a live bet. Under Singapore Pools rules, goals scored before a live bet is placed do not count.
No line is low-risk. The chance of a refund is already priced into the odds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does +0.5 mean in Asian Handicap?
Your team gets a half-goal head start. The bet wins if they win or draw and loses if they lose. It cannot be refunded.
What does -0.75 mean in the Asian Handicap?
Half your stake is on -0.5 and half on -1. A win by two or more is a full win, a one-goal win is a half win, and a draw or defeat loses the whole stake.
Can an Asian Handicap bet be refunded?
Yes. Whole-goal lines such as 0 or -1 refund the full stake when the adjusted score is level. Quarter-goal lines can refund half the stake. Half-goal lines are never refunded.
How is the Asian Handicap different from 1X2?
1X2 has three selections, including the draw, and no refunds. Asian Handicap has two, and a draw settles as a win, loss, refund or partial result depending on the line.
How does live Asian Handicap work in Singapore?
Singapore Pools settles live Asian Handicap bets on goals scored after the bet is placed, up to the end of regulation time. Earlier goals and extra time do not count.
